Site C......The BC Liberal Boondoggle.....A Straight Goods Special

Written by Grant G

"garbage in, garbage out"

Who is the champion for the millions of ratepayers being saddled with the cost of paying for an ill-conceived $12 billion Site C dam....?

Shouldn't ratepayers be given a voice? and a choice?

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the Site C decision...

Postmedia, ...Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers.....they, Michael Smyth, Vaughn Palmer, ..there were no scathing criticisms of Christy Clark and the BC Liberal government on the decision to proceed with BC's most expensive energy project without having the electrical/electricity experts(the BCUC) and protector of ratepayers review the proposal...

The BC Liberals knew full well the regulator would turn the project down, not for political reasons, not for ideological reasons but for the reason of unproven need of the power and the cost....

Full Stop.....BC's media should have hammered the BC Liberals over and over again for sidestepping the BCUC, hammered Christy Clark for preventing the British Columbia Utilities Commission from doing their tasked job...and if that wasn't a big enough failure for BC's media...just look at this..

Christy Clark...February 2016..and I quote..

She promised to finish Bennett’s vision for the controversial Site C Dam project.
"Premier Bennett, you got it started and I will get it finished. I will get it past the point of no return."

Full stop.....Media fail number one....any premier, of any province or territory in Canada who refused to send a multi-billion dollar taxpayer funded project to the regulatory body to see if the project was cost effective or even needed, then said premier, after denying a proper review told the public that the entire project was being fast-tracked and rushed forward for the stated goal to push the project past the point of no return...

Any premier who did that should have been vilified in the press, chased from office...

BC's media was......silent......now in late 2017 that same media is not silent they're are complicit in cheerleading a $12 billion dollar ill-conceived, not needed energy project..

case in point...Christy Clark cheerleader and fact-free hack Michael Smyth...this article is so full of incorrect numbers, blanket exaggerations and snarl..

Smyth claims it's a $8.8 billion dollar project.....it isn't...it's a minimum of a $12 billion dollar project..Smyth claims remediation of Site C will cost $2 billion, that's wrong, Site C can be remediated for a few hundred million dollars...not only did Smyth exaggerate his numbers, the numbers he exaggerated come from BC Hydro's exaggerated numbers...

Garbage in....Garbage out..

Lets have a look at Vaughn Palmer....

The Vaughn Palmer technique....Vaughn Palmer's method of operation over the last decade(shill warning)..Vaughn Palmer lightly criticizes the BC Liberals as in a tsk tsk rebuke and over the course of a few weeks comes around to endorsing the BC Liberals with, as usual...misinformation, case in point..

On November 10th/2017.....Arlene Boon, a resident of the Peace River Valley posted this picture of the $500 million dollar Site C work camp parking lot..

the parking lot is near empty, ...Arlene Boon lives in the nearby area....Vaughn Palmer is a Victoria resident...

BC Hydro and it's Site C contractors have at present a skeleton crew working at Site C..in other words..the majority of these 2400 advertised workers are already unemployed...the reason? tension cracks, more technical problems, geological terrain problems, a near $1 billion dollar contingency fund has already been 80% exhausted(spent with 75% of the work still to be done)...At present, the fact that Christy Clark rammed the project through, with no oversight, with deliberately low-balled bids... the main contractors are arguing right now with BC Hydro over money, as in...the contractors want $hundreds of millions of more dollars to pay for the unseen technical/geological and structural issues...as a result of this dispute work at Site C work has been reduced to a crawl..

Vaughn Palmer technique exposed....Vaughn Palmer has mastered the art of lying to the public by using other people's words...

Vaughn Palmer, under direct orders by Postmedia corporate bosses has ramped up his "technique"

This photo of Site C's near empty parking lot rattled Postmedia....Send in the Palmer for a rescue...

Vaughn Palmer in a series of Tweets on Friday tried to debunk Arlene Boon's proof through what only could be described as ......deliberate propaganda and deceptive spin.....

First Vaughn Palmer tweeted this....

NDP government releases latest Site C construction bulletin.

First off.....the NDP government, or if you like, the BC Government did not release this Site C construction bulletin....BC Hydro did...and the construction bulletin itself, it's generic and unchanged from previous BC Hydro Site C bulletins...

Then Vaughn Palmer tweeted this(back to back tweets)...

Latest Site C jobs numbers from NDP government:

You see that......again Vaughn Palmer is saying....NDP government(why not say BC Government Vaughn?) and...The BC Government didn't release any Site C job numbers..BC Hydro(known and proven liars) did...and, you see the near empty parking lot...the job numbers link to BC Hydro Vaughn Palmer provided are from September...not November..

Here is that link....

How is it Vaughn Palmer now is saying that....BC Hydro press releases, spin, propaganda is not BC Hydro but actually "The NDP Government"....

I called Vaughn Palmer out on that.....Vaughn Palmer put up a feeble attempt to deflect from his deliberate trickery by saying....

Replying to
And to whom does BC Hydro answer to politically? The NDP gov't that fired its CEO, appointed handpicked executive chair.

We see right through you Vaughn Palmer....you trying to create the narrative that the NDP are giving Site C construction bulletins and regular employment numbers...as in you are trying to paint the NDP as being complicit with BC Liberal lies....funny stuff Vaughn..The BC Hydro construction bulletin link you tweeted is for November, yet the BC Hydro job numbers link you tweeted is months old....(Gotcha again Vaughn)

OK....So now in Vaughn Palmer's world....Failed Crowns like ICBC...Translink..BC Hydro are now the NDP Government....

BC Hydro....I did mention how BC Hydro lies.....their electricity demand forecasts over the last decade have been woefully wrong...electrical demand over the last decade, despite a big increase in BC's population is flat, even falling...

and...BC Liberals over the last 16 years appointed political hacks to BC Hydro to their dirty work..I mentioned BC Hydro are liars...Jessica MacDonald...Gordon Campbell's Chief of staff, BC Liberals appointed Jessica as CEO of BC Hydro...

____________

BC Hydro boss Jessica MacDonald apologizes for inaccurate testimony

VICTORIA — BC Hydro is apologizing to the province’s independent power regulator for misleading testimony it provided on a multi-million-dollar computer software project.
Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald said Monday she is sorry her Crown power agency gave inaccurate testimony to the B.C. Utilities Commission

_______________
So...BC(Liberal) Government appointed CEO Jessica MacDonald lies to the BCUC...and then there's this..
___________

With Electrical Demand Dropping, BC Hydro Cut Length of Forecast, Charges NDP's Dix

BC Hydro planned to hide the fact that long-term demand for electricity in British Columbia is projected to decline, even as the Crown corporation works to greatly increase the amount of power it produces, NDP critic Adrian Dix charged in a recent letter to the minister responsible.

_______________
Garbage in, garbage out...
The media, the spindoctors, Postmedia corporate shills and even big labour unions are pushing for John Horgan to carry on with BC's largest ever boondoggle....
Who is working for the ratepayers..who is protecting us, how come those who have to pay the bill are being left out of the conversation/debate, ...to those labour unions, to John Horgan...this isn't about stopping a project being built with private money, or investor money, these are tax dollars and nobody can justify spending $12 billion dollars to create 2000 temporary jobs..the math doesn't work..
Big media, and "Today's BC Liberals" are arguing that canceling Site C will cause a 10% rate hike...  this is more spin..that rate hike is coming anyway whether Site C was built or not..in 2001 when the BC Liberals became government BC Hydro had one deferral account with a $184 million dollar deferred bill....today BC Hydro has over $6 billion dollars in unpaid deferral accounts..that rate hike is/was coming either way..
Site C...if Site C was built at a cost of $8.8 billion dollars it was a bad deal, with a projected pay-off of the build cost in 80 years(the useful life of the Site C dam is projected to be 90 years, then decommissioned at a cost of $billions) at $12 billion dollars..the project will never be paid off, it will be decommissioned with $billions still owed..
Garbage in, garbage out...
Proponents of Site C can't even make up their mind as to who will require or buy the power...some say we need Site C to power up LNG...not true, LNG producers can't economically compete on the world stage by adding the cost of expensive electricity to their product..and as for LNG, it's a mugg's game and LNG isn't coming to B.C.
Others have claimed Alberta will buy Site C power...again, not true, Alberta can produce all the energy they need cheaply buying their own abundance of natural gas....Site C power for Alberta, is merely a bargaining chip to push through more pipelines to BC's pristine coastline..
Other spindoctors claim BC will ultimately need more electricity to power up all the incoming electric cars...again, that is pure hogwash...Electric cars will get predominately charged at night, when gobs and gobs of excess power exist in all energy markets all over the world..even more..Elon Musk, the master of the electric cars says electric cars won't need grid power at all for charging...
____________
I have heard the casual refrain “electric vehicles will save the grid from the death spiral” too many times to count. The assumption is that people will charge their vehicles at home. That it would simply be too hard to supply the energy cheaply, in any other way, than via our century-old energy market.
Given Tesla is saying almost all of its charging stations will go off-grid, is it time to revisit this assumption? Absolutely.
Unfortunately I can stand at the Tesla superchargers and see the coal power plant. Play the shell game all you want these are coal powered.
All Superchargers are being converted to solar/battery power. Over time, almost all will disconnect from the electricity grid.
I always enjoyed the phrase “to assume makes an ass of u and me”, a great way to remember the spelling, and so true as well.
The assumption that people will charge their vehicles at home with off-peak power is a cracker. Today, we don’t refuel our cars at home (or work), even though most people drive their cars to the same place everyday, park it for eight hours and then drive it home.
Charging your car at home not only requires a new pattern of consumer behaviour, it ignores the obvious opportunity – charging your car while it sits idle at work during the day, 5 days a week.
A 50km return trip to work will cost you about $1.50 in electricity. At that price, your company will probably pick up the tab, and it is certainly cheaper than the train ticket!
Need to shop on the way home? No problem. Looking at EV charging trends, many commercial shopping centres are realising the value of a free EV charge (in the hope of attracting visitors) is worth more than the cost of provision. Those same shopping centre’s are also putting MW’s of solar on the roof.
All of a sudden, instead of charging your EV at home, it looks like you will be returning home with more than 60kWh under the bonnet. 60kWh is enough to power a reasonably efficient home for six days. Still willing to bet people will charge their cars at home?
Set aside the practicalities of Tesla taking its charging stations off-grid for the moment (Musk is probably playing the crowd). There is a much easier off-grid play, once you join the dots.
What do you get when you join SolarCity with the world’s most recognised EV brand (Tesla), the world’s most recognised battery product (Tesla Powerwall) – and then throw some solar tiles in for fun? You get an irresistible combination of technologies which makes it oh so tempting to take the humble household off-the-grid.
A large solar system (5kW+), mid-size battery (13.5kWh for argument’s sake) and a car with 80kWh of storage is a compelling combination for a household energy solution.
The fixed solar and storage asset at home easily supplies your household power needs during a typical day. For six months of the year (summer, plus shoulder months), you probably have excess solar power during the day, perfect for topping up the car if it is parked at home.

________________
All the arguments for proceeding with Site C come up empty.....
Only one argument for proceeding with Site C actually exists....that argument is...
Spending $12 billion dollars on Site C will give 2000 workers temporary employment...is that argument strong enough to trump all the logical arguments to stop Site C..?
That is what John Horgan has to decide....does Horgan saddle ratepayers with ridiculously high electricity rates forever for the sake of a couple thousand temporary jobs..
If John Horgan commits BC Hydro to spending all that money, with excess power now, with no power demand coming...all future energy projects proposed...wind power..solar power..tidal power..geothermal power...all the ingenuity, all that looking forward technology leaves British Columbia forever, as BC will have no use for any new technology, we'll be too preoccupied and too debt saddled with Site C to do anything else...
Lastly....within the next couple of years, this Powell River Persuader is going off grid power completely, and he's not alone..

"Technological upheaval is threatening to upend Ontario's electricity sector faster than the government can revamp it.
As the price of rooftop solar panels plummets and large-scale batteries become affordable for the first time, a future where Ontarians produce their own power and cut the cord to the wider grid appears to be approaching."

_______________

Over to you John Horgan.

Keeyask/Muskrat/Bipole 3

burrard thermal politically neutered and we are forbidden to use it with our sea of natual gas.WTF

Zero growth, now negative as of last quarter, for 11 years and to blow 12 billion dollars and sell power at a potential loss after? The only thing growing is the debt.?
Why is it you never see an annual demand graph from BCHydro Hmmm…?You may not sell to Alberta -they installed a gas turbine ,like the politically neutered burrard thermal.?
Look and see Keeyask/Muskrat/Bipole3.

Looking through Google Earth at the parking lot (April 25, 206 shown) there are fewer vehicles shown that the photo provided here. Could it be that the workers travel to and from the campsite via company provided buses?

Another great article. Facts and figures to digest. I hope this gong show gets ended but my kids and grandkids are going to be paying for this for far to long no matter what the decision. If it goes through it will undoubtedly even affect my great grandkids when they show up. The new Government needs to stop the madness now!

The Gordon Campbell, Liberal Government was a criminal enterprise, where the sole purpose of the BC Liberals was to divest BC's (the people's) investment to friends and cronies of Gordon Campbell.

BC Rail was sold off cheap, BC Ferries hived off into a quasi public private operation, where friends of the government made millions while the servcie languished. The Canada Line P-3 was a complete sham, where SNC Lavalin, bid against itself for the phony P-3. Even judge Pittfield, presiding over the Susan Heyes Lawsuit, caller the bidding process for the Canada line a charade.

Highways and bridges were built to suit the Road builders Association and favourite engineering companies. The more expensive the better.

And then there are the casinos. expanded as a massive money laundering scheme to launder illicit profits from friends of the government, who just happened to be the "big" drug dealers.

And on and on we go.

The police and courts were neutered by the Liberals and allowed criminal activity to flourish in BC.

Property and real estate scandals are nothing more than the money laundering process to continue.

It was Campbell's greed with the HST which caused his downfall, the public had enough.

But then we got the supreme grifter as premier, whose sole purpose in government was to enrich all people who donated to the the Liberals and by donating to the Liberals, meant she could take a cut of $50K a year.

Capbell's and Clark's BC is now a criminal mess and sadly i do not think the NDP have the whit to rectify it.
